I absolutely get it! I do it too. Once while climbing in Rifle, Colorado on a weekend, I developed a great excuse to not have to climb in front of one of the people who had sponsored me.
Courage is the willingness to not do it right. Courage is the willingness to get it wrong and then the willingness to live with the consequences. Those are our heroes - the people willing to deal with the potential negative outcomes.
How can we learn to be courageous enough to be willing to deal with the consequences?
Focus on the outcome you want, not the one that you do not.
Then focus on the step you need to take in THIS moment. Then when this is complete, focus on the next step.
When you need to review what is happening, learn from what has happened and make the next decision.
In other words, keep being courageous and doing the hard thing.
